My daughter is 4 and she is REALLY moody from time to time. It seems to be only on the days when she was high or low. I know this is a side effect but I need to understand more. Since she isn’t able to convey her emotions through words yet please let me know what it feels like, from your experience. And what helps/doesn’t help, makes it worse/better, any advice from another type 1 diabetic would be helpful.

Type 1 Diabetes, How Long Does It Take For Anger/irritability To Subside After Experiencing A High Or Low?
By 4 Comments
That’s rough since she can’t express herself. I personally haven’t had irritability as a side effect, other than I can get a little spacey and frustrated if I get low. Her mood should return to normal once her BG’s return to normal. 15 min. or so if she just ate candy for a low, or an hour or so if you gave her a corrective dose of insulin for a high. As she gets older you can teach her to alert you if she’s “feeling funny” so you can check her BG.
My son was diagnosed at 7. He’s 16 now. For him, when he was nasty due to high or low blood sugar it usually resolved by the time his blood sugar was back to normal. 4 year olds are tough, I imagine a 4 year old with diabetes is a lot of work!
Ask your endocrinologist if there are any support groups in your area. It really helps to talk to others with the same problem. When my son was diagnosed I got involved in JDRF activities and met other moms and it was so helpful!
When she is old enough, about 7, think about sending her to diabetes summer camp. My son learned sooo much there and it helped his self-esteem a lot.
With me, I typically feel fine within an hour or so, with the exception of the headache I always get after a severe low. Fortunately, those rarely happen. A mild low has no effects that I can perceive.
