What If A Type 1 Diabetes Stayed 2 Days Without Eating?
By 10 Comments
Are you familiar with the word “dead?” I let my blood sugar get too low and I go into diabetic coma which, if left untreated, would lead to death. It is NOT something to screw around with. Just the seizure alone scares the crap out of me–even though I must say it would be a nice way to go because I never remember anything after I wake up. I’m just missing time.
Blood sugar is still released, by the body into the blood stream without food. But as stated above, because it is an unpredictable situation if you are not feeding your body, it would certainly land someone in a very dangerous situation. It would not make them “un-diabetic” if this is the attempt. Diabetes 1 does not come on from what you eat. It is managed and controlled by making good food choices, but it would still exist even if food were taken away. Better option is to eat healthy and take the shots and medicines prescribed.
Humans need insulin 24/7. Even if you don’t eat a thing and drink only water. You always need a trickle of it (I need roughly 3/4 of a unit per hour) to keep your blood sugar stable. Nothing horrible will happen if you just drink water for 2 days, provided you’re still getting your baseline insulin. If there is no insulin, blood sugar will rise starting immediately, and you will go into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) within a day or so. So it’s the lack of insulin, not the lack of food, that is is the problem.
If he’s not eating, he’ll become hypoglycemic quickly. A sugar of less than 65 is risky for a coma, and death is around the corner.
He’s also at risk for diabetic ketoacidosis, which many people only equate with too MUCH (untreated) sugar. But a starving body and an absence of insulin is a recipe for DKA: Basically, when the body thinks it’s starving, it tries to help. It breaks down organs to stay alive. If yo’ure not eating, not making (or taking) insulin, vomiting or diarrhea, your body thinks it’s starving. It takes intense insulin therapy and an inpatient hospital stay to reverse DKA. Two days of not eating or taking insulin is dangerous for anybody, but more so for a person that doesn’t make their own insulin.
Anyone can develop ketoacidosis, not just diabetics. Anorexia or a really bad flu are examples of a non-diabetic at risk for ketoacidosis. It yields feelings of nausea, unexplainable sleepiness, labored breathing and projectile vomiting. A urine or blood test confirms ketoacidosis. A coma follows (if untreated), and death is imminent.
Type I diabetes is when the pancreas completly stops making insulin. Insulin turns carbohydrates, protiens and fats into usable nutrients for the body.
Regarding your question; a lot depends upon the age of the person and their activity. Not taking insulin would concern me the most. If the blood sugar gets too high it can do irreversible damage in too many ways to name here. The person could even go into a coma and in extreme circumstances die. If you are not eating AND not taking insulin and you are active, I’m pretty sure you are just going to be very hungry.
I really think you should call the Diabetes Foundation or better yet a doctor if you or anyone you know is seriously considering trying this.
I don’t know what would happen, but sounds like a receipe for disaster to me.
If you dont do shots your blood sugar will go high but if u cut back to like half of what you normally do (lantas) then you will be totally fine.
lol i tried to lose weight that way but you feel liike ****. I lost 5lbs in 2 days tho.
they will feel very angry and frustraded& tired possabble have pain all over
They would be hypothetically dead in such a case.
First hunger.
Then high blood sugar, which can bring on moodiness and a deep hunger, fuzzy eyesight, a desperate need for the toilet many times a day, along with a desperate thirst, and tiredness.
Then great discomfort with outrageously high blood sugar.
Then coma (may or may not happen within the 2 days)… and if it kept going, the next step is death.
If a person doesn’t eat (diabetic or not), the liver encourages glucose release, so even if that person WAS taking their insulin they’d probably end up with high blood sugar – assuming their background insulin was correct. If they weren’t eating but were still taking their meal insulin they’d be in trouble with low blood sugar.
Diabetics must never give up their insulin. Even missing one dose can be horrible – although not the end of the world. Missing one meal is no biggie if they’re testing their blood sugar and willing to make adjustments with snacks / insulin as needed. But what you’re talking about here is serious stuff for a diabetic – very very dangerous.
There are long term effects from high blood sugar that can be quite scary – and fatal (in a slow and horrible way). I really hope you don’t know anyone who would attempt this kind of craziness.
