I have type 1 diabetes and I’m wanting to gain more from lifting weights. I have heard that consuming a lot of protein is not good for your kidneys. Diabetes is also hard on your kidneys. I’m wondering if there is a specific amount of protein that is safe for me to consume with my workouts. How much protein should I consume each day, and how much should I consume before and after my workout if I want to aid muscle building, but at the same time, not harm my kidneys?

    Protein in excess of what you need each day is metabolized like carbos and sugar. You do not need much protein so drinking it is a real waste.

    Most of the time, it’s when things get abused that they become harmful to you. Protein is one of the main muscle builders / healers. If you want to “play it safe”, eat food high in protien and forget the enhancers. Study the body buillders of the “old school”. They use to eat right in order to gain muscle. I’m talking about the people from the 30′s 40′s 50′s and early 60′s. Jack Lelane, his philosophy is, if God didn’t make it, don’t eat it. Not a bad thought at all. But look to the past for the healthiest and best ways to gain strength and muscle. Back then, they were all based on what their own bodies could od and yes, they were very strong. They were not drug enhanced at all.

    Be careful. As you probably know increasing exercise for Diabetics will lower your blood sugar levels. So you may need less insulin with continous exercise.To much protein for anyone can overload the kidneys. Diabetics cannot metabolize carbohydrates not protein. Diabetes is hard on your kidneys when the blood sugars are above normal continuously. Its best to ask your Doctor what is a suitable amount of protein for your Metabolism.
