It is possible. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease, so it is possible to occur at any age, especially if you have a family history of it.

If a child is over weight chances are higher. But any child could develop diabetes. But having a family history of it also increases your risk.

Unexpected weight loss is also a sign of type 2 diabetes. It’s what clued me in that I needed to see a doctor, and mention my family history of diabetes. So it could be either type of diabetes mellitus.

Any young adult can get type 1 diabetes, obese or not.
