It is possible. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease, so it is possible to occur at any age, especially if you have a family history of it.

Hi,
Yes, young adults can get Type 1 diabetes, and yes, unexpected weight loss can be a warning. If you really want to know the warning signs go to http://www.moviningonwithdiabetes.com
It's a web site run by a woman who suddenly had the Type 1 and she went sudden weight loss too.
It's good for a load of info on the disease. I used it myself.
Regards.
Rich.

If a child is over weight chances are higher. But any child could develop diabetes. But having a family history of it also increases your risk.

Unexpected weight loss is also a sign of type 2 diabetes. It's what clued me in that I needed to see a doctor, and mention my family history of diabetes. So it could be either type of diabetes mellitus.
