Ron Santo and Bert Blyleven. Am I right or wrong on any of these? Who do you think will be inducted?

  1. Chipmake says:

Henderson will get in with more than 90% of the returns.
Rice will get in (72% in 2008), I do hope, simply because the amount of drivel written afterward will die off more quickly with him being elected than if he is rejected yet again and far too many indignant writers spew their fullest gorge in dismay and denunciation. F*ck it, just give him the plaque.
Blyleven should be in by now. He’s got a good chance, but I’m thinking 2010.
Dawson similar to Blyleven, though I am far more stoutly in support of Bert.
Santo — well, he is easily the worthiest candidate of all 20 men on the two VC ballots, but since this is the first cycle of these VC subcommittees — both specific electorates and the ballot compositions (though there are many familiar names included), there is no meaningful way to predict what will happen; no precedents. I’m hoping Santo gets the happy ending here — but if he doesn’t, if even an electorate of his peers (and ONLY his peers; the living HOFers are almost all ex-players) won’t give him his due, I think he has to be moved to history’s ashcan. Which is not a warm thought, really a dismal one, but eventually the tea leaves must be read with clarity.

With the exception of Blyleven, I agree:
Henderson is a certainty. No other first-timer on the ballot will make it.
Rice has a strong chance – he just missed it last year (72%, with 75% needed); Blyleven a bit less so (61% last year).
On the Veterans Committee ballot, I think Santo will make it if only so that stat-heads will stop arguing about whether or not he belongs.

  3. Utter Chaos says:

I can see all four of them getting in. Henderson definitely, Rice and Blyleven probably, and Santo is borderline.
I think Andrew Dawson, and Lee Smith need to wait a little while longer.

  4. Bert Weidemeier says:

    Henderson should be in.
Gil Hodges should also be inducted, his induction is looooooooooooong overdue.

  5. wally5k says:

Henderson for sure. While I think Rice should be in, every year he lacks the votes.

  6. 2008 World Champion Phillies says:

    Henderson – 100% certainty
Jim Rice – He deserves it, it will be close
Ron Santo- I agree, The Veterans Committee will get him in
    Bert Blyleven – He’s a borderline HOF’er , I don’t see it
I believe it will be Henderson,Rice and Santo

  7. Jon says:

    Henderson yes.
Rice, iffy, but OK, if it keeps the Fenway faithful quiet. Personally I’d put Dwight Evans in first.
Blyleven, yes. 3700+ strike outs, 280+ wins, a World Series Ring, I think he had a better career than guys like Catfish Hunter, who’s in.
    Ron Santo, soon I hope.
