I have been a Cub’s fan since 5th grade and always admired the commentary of Ron Santo so I looked up his career stats.

Led NL in On-base % in 1964 with .398 and 1966 with .412
Led NL in triples in 1964 with 13
Career stats (3rd baseman)
AVG .277

HITS 2,254
HR 342
Phil Rizzuto (HALL OF FAMER)

Do You Think Ron Santo Should Be In The Hall Of Fame?
By 13 Comments
Phil Rizzuto was a better player in his era and he was part of world Champions. unlike Ron Santo that played in pretty bad teams. I think he should be in because he was one of the best of his time.
I agree Santo should be in there, but I don’t agree with the logic that he should be in because he’s better than Rizzuto. He is better than Rizzuto, but that may just mean that Rizzuto shouldn’t have been selected. Also, just presenting their stats like that doesn’t do justice to the fact that Rizzuto was a tremendous defensive shortstop with great range, and that great shortstops don’t need to hit as much as third basemen do.
The relevant point is that he’s better than any eligible third baseman who’s not in the Hall of Fame, and a lot of the ones who are. Either he or Bert Blyleven is probably the best eligible player who’s not in.
When my child whines and cries about wanting a new toy over and over and over again, he does not get it. Ron Santo is a child as he cries about wanting to be in the Hall before he dies. And he whines about it over and over and over. No toy for Ron.
ronnie santo is the greatest player not in the hall that is eligible. no question about it.
Absolutely fellow Cubs fan. He should be in tha Hall of Fame. This man played the game the way it should be played and deserves to be in the Hall.
And even if he doesn’t get inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame next time (again), he said his Hall of Fame is the # 10 flag flying high over Wrigley Field.
yes.
I say that Santo deserves it, but he’s not a shoe-in. I say that when you compare him to other third basemen both from his era and history, he’s one of the greatest.
Yes, absolutely.
Rizzuto was a major leader on 7 World Series champions. Also, he was a shortstop which doesn’t require as lofty stats. That said, Santo belongs. 342 home runs in that era was about 550 in today’s game. 35 homers would lead the league then.
He should be in. No question.
ron who?
Let me begin, dear Cubs fan, by telling you that I’m a die-hard Cardinals fan. That said, here’s what I think….
YES! Santo should be a Hall of Famer. I hear those who say that Rizzuto was a HOFer because of playing on all those championship teams. Fine for “Scooter”, and he deserved to be there.
Santo deserves to be there because he performed consistently, year in and out, for teams that everyone (including the guys that played on them) knew wouldn’t even compete for championships. He continued to bust his body and put up outstanding numbers, even though he knew he wouldn’t win.
To me, that’s the mark of a great athlete, and definitely the mark of a Hall of Famer, especially when you put his numbers side by side with others currently enshrined.
I just hope the BBWAA figures this out while he’s still alive.
I’m a Phillies fan first off and of course Ron Santo should be into the Hall of Fame.
He is what baseball is all about. A great ambassador of the game.
As a Phillies fan I can remember how hard it was to get one of the greatest center fielders that ever played the game into the HOF, his name Richie Ashburn.
Sometimes I don’t know what the writers and the HOF committee want from a person.
Here is a player that played the game of Baseball the way it is supposed to be played, and off the field a truly respected and generous man. So yes Ron Santo should be a Hall OF Famer no questions asked,
