God I hope so. He deserves it so bad. He’s probably the most favorite Cub of all time
Because of the inconsistent standards of HOF voting, it’s difficult to tell. Santo is an example of a guy who would get in on the first ballot had his career not been shortened.
The problem with that is you have other guys like that who either get in or don’t get in. For example, Sandy Koufax is in the HOF but Therman Munson isn’t and Munson was one of the best players of his time.
Let’s compare Santo to the other best third baseman of that era, Brooks Robinson. Robinson is in the HOF because of his hit total (2848) and his amazing defense.
Santo was also an elite defender. And Robinson played eight years longer. Had Santo been able to played until he was 40, like Robinson, he would have gotten even more hits. Santo had 2254 hits when he retired.
Santo also had an OPS+ of 125, better than Robinson’s 104, which is just above average. Santo had better plate discipline and hit for better power.
Robinson got in on the first ballot, which shows how underrated Santo is. It’s just a matter of what the voters are thinking when it comes to if he’ll get in.
Remember the Baseball HOF is not like the Hockey HOF where all you had to do was breathe to get in, Baseball is the toughest HOF to enter.Looking at his stats not 1 stands out as a HOF’er. Looking overall though, I would say that yes he does deserve to be there. If not by the baseball writers then more than likely by the Veteran’s committee. It would have been a no brainer if he had played on a close to or a championship team
I deeply hope so.
Worthiest player not in the Hall.
