(COOPERSTOWN, NY): The list of eligible candidates for consideration by the Veterans Committee for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 has been announced, the first step in the election process to consider players, managers, umpires and executives for next year’s Veterans Committee election.

The Historical Overview Committee, a group independent of Hall of Fame employees, members and directors, was appointed by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s (BBWAA) Board of Directors, to develop a list of 200 former players, as well as a list of 60 former managers, umpires and executives. The committee, comprised of nine historians and veteran baseball writers, met in the internationally renowned Baseball Hall of Fame Library Research Center in December. After further research over the past few months, the committee has finalized its choices.

The committee included Dave Van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune; Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun; Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau; Moss Klein of the Newark Star-Ledger; Bill Madden of the New York Daily News ; Ken Nigro, former Baltimore Sun writer; Jack O’Connell of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America; Nick Peters of the Sacramento Bee; and Mark Whicker of the Orange County Register.

The original list of players, which includes all eligible major leaguers to have played in at least 10 seasons, up to and including the 1985 season, encompassed more than 1,400 players. The National Baseball Hall of Fame Library, along with the Elias Sports Bureau, the official statistician of Major League Baseball since the 1920s, provided the data used by the committee to determine its choices.

The next phase of the process, to take place this summer, will involve a BBWAA-appointed screening committee to pare the list of former players from 200 to 25. Simultaneously, the screening committee will pare the list of managers, umpires and executives from 60 to 15. The 60-member screening committee will consist of two writers from each of the 20 major league cities with one team and four writers from each of Chicago, New York, Baltimore/Washington, Los Angeles and the Bay Area, each of which has two major league teams.

Each writer will be asked to select 25 players and 15 managers, umpires and executives to comprise the two ballots. The top 25 and 15, respectively, based on vote totals, will comprise the final ballots. Simultaneously, a six-member screening committee of Hall of Fame members will independently select five players to be added to the list of 25, should they not already be included. The final ballots will be announced this fall.

The Veterans Committee electorate, comprised of the living Hall of Fame members (61), Ford C. Frick Award recipients (14), J.G. Taylor Spink Award recipients (8) and former Veterans Committee members whose terms have not yet expired (1), will cast their votes in January 2007. All candidates who earn votes on 75% of ballots cast will be enshrined in the summer of 2007. The two votes held with this process in place, in 2003 and 2005, did not produce any electees. The entire process will be repeated again for eligible players in 2009, with the next consideration of managers, umpires and executives taking place in 2011.
